Subtraction WEEK
I have this board on my wall made out of clear adhesive backed vinyl that allows me to write on the wall with glo-write fluorescent markers. The wall is packed right now. I have found that each January there is so much our team wants to accomplish. Normally the first two weeks of January are crammed with vision and implementation of those plans the Lord has called us to; then, the 3rd week is subtraction time. In order to do what we do well better we have to ask ourselves what to subtract.
Subtraction saves marriages by providing the margin necessary to have a fulfilling marriage. Subtraction empowers our church by giving our volunteers time to reboot. Subtraction strengthens our creativity by not allowing us to waste it on unnecessary programs and events. Subtraction gives room to what is most important, by allowing for a clear head and clear heart.
Subtraction does not mean less, but it means "more and better". We are good at a few things at The Rock Church and we need to do those things more often and better. Everything else is subtracted. Some items on the schedule will not be subtracted. Those events which define the ministry in powerful ways are critical to the life of the church, but when subtraction week comes everything is evaluated and considered.
Subtraction is not negative, but it is constructive. When we subtract we allow time and space for the construction of new projects that may have never been considered. We have made as many good decisions at TRC because of subtraction as we have addition.
Are there any areas of TRC you wouldn't miss if they never happened again?
