WHAT A WEEKEND
This weekend a buddy in our church made plans for me and Pastor Ron to fly to Phoenix International Raceway for the Craftsman Truck, Nationwide and Sprint Cup races. We arrived in Tuscon, Arizona on Thursday and headed for a short track race where one of our friends, Travis Bennet, from the NW was racing. I played the role of crew member, and nut and bolted the car. Travis was really fast all day. He qualified 4th. During his heat race he took the lead on lap 4 and never looked back. When the main event started Travis was on the pole. He settled into 2nd place; I really thought he would win. Unfortunately the engine blew up on lap 4, his night was finished.
On Friday we traveled to Tombstone, AZ. You know, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday; battle of the OK Corral. My parents and I used to go to Tombstone when we would come to Arizona. My dad had a tradition when we would come. He would by a cool western gun from the gun store. I was looking forward to going to the gun store again and possibly finding a nice addition to his collection. There was only one problem, the gun store changed owners, and it went from world class collectibles and to lame junk. I was a bit disappointed.
We left and went to Phoenix International Raceway. After 4 hours of driving we got there for the last 70 laps of the Craftsman Truck Race. On Saturday we got our pit passes and headed for the Nationwide race.
Today, Sunday, we are sitting in the hotel room waiting to head to the speedway. I am looking forward to seeing race #9 of the Chase for the Cup. So, yes, I'm having a great time with some friends cuttin it up and laughing. Good times are so important when you serve people for life, I needed this trip.
